Year 10 Visit to Jane Austen’s House

On 16 March the Year 10 group who have been studying Pride and Prejudice went to visit Jane Austen’s house at Chawton.  They had an excellent talk from one of the education team before visiting the house and seeing the table where the novel – and all others – was written, plus many other things which she owned and used.

Pupils were able to dress up in costumes of the time becoming Mrs. Bennet and her daughters, made lavender bags, just as Jane Austen and her heroines would have done and tried their hand at writing with a quill pen – not easy!

The group then went on to her brother’s grand house, which is now a library, just a ten minute walk away, retracing the steps which the author would have taken. Like every good day out, the day ended with refreshments in the tea rooms.

It was an inspirational day and we hope that we can do it again for revision purposes close to Christmas when we will be able to see the grand hall at the library boasting a huge Christmas tree, lit by candles and with a roaring log fire.
