Year 9 Chemistry of Food

Year 9 are making progress through their GCSE Biology course and have been carrying out one of their ‘Required Practicals’: The Chemistry of Food and food tests.

They tested various food stuffs (such as toast, cheerios, rice, egg, cheese, haribo sweets, milk and vegetable oil) with qualitative reagents to test for starch, sugar, lipid and protein.

The Science pupils were fascinated to see the various colour combinations that resulted and to find out  which food contained the most sugar, starch, protein and fats.
