GCSE Poetry Conference

Year 11 were invited to attend a GCSE poetry conference at The Apollo Theatre, Victoria on Friday 24 February.

Year 11 listened to Carol Ann Duffy giving a commentary on her poetry about her mother, Owen Sheers reciting poetry from his new work about war and Imtiaz Dhakar explaining the inspiration behind her poetry about human flesh. Daljit Nagra gripped the audience with his Punjabi/ English mix poetry, Simon Armitage gave his reflections of growing up and leaving home and the day finished with John Agard’s performance of his new work with a Calypso feel.

The day was thoroughly inspiring and it was very useful to have the examiners comments on poetry comparison. The pupils left with a new confidence and a deeper understanding of the poetry they will be studying in the exam.
