As part of their ‘Active Planet’ topic, Year 3 had a great time building, painting and then exploding volcanoes! The pupils worked in pairs to build the base using newspaper around a plastic bottle, then painted them to make them look like volcanoes. They then discussed how they could explode them to create ‘lava’.
Everyone managed to get some fantastic results using vinegar as the acid and bicarbonate of soda as the alkali to create a chemical reaction. Some washing up liquid and red food colouring helped to make a more realistic eruption!
