Year 7 enjoy a beyond the classroom activity reading “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl. In the sunshine the girls read about Mary Maloney, a devoted pregnant housewife, who kills her husband, Patrick, a police detective, after he announces he’s leaving her. Spoiler alert– In a moment of shock, she bludgeons him with a frozen leg of lamb. To cover her tracks, she cooks the lamb and serves it to the police officers investigating the murder, effectively getting rid of the murder weapon and making them complicit in her deception. The story is a dark comedy exploring themes of betrayal, manipulation, and the unexpected darkness that can exist within seemingly ordinary people.
