Year 9 Explore the Heart

Year 9 have been studying the topic of circulation and as part of this they are learning about the structure and function of the heart. In class the pupils were fascinated to dissect sheep’s hearts. The session went on much longer than usual because everyone was so interested in all the heart tissues and their functions.

They analysed the muscle tissue and the heart valves as well as looking at and feeling the fat around the arteries. There was a lot of discussion about how the heart works to pump blood both to the body tissues and to the lungs.
