Year 1 Get A Taste Of What Life Was Like For Victorian Children

Ellen Buxton was a young Victorian girl from a wealthy family in Leytonstone. Ellen loved to write in her diary and make sketches of family life, including many of her brothers and sisters playing with their favourite toys. Ellen’s diaries have allowed people to have a better idea of the types of toys Victorian children would have played with.

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed the Toy Workshop based on toys from the past and learnt a great deal.  The children investigated whether the toys Ellen Buxton played with over 100 years ago are very different from the toys they play with today.

The children compared stilts, hoops and seesaws and enjoyed playing with a variety of old toys such as Jacob’s Ladder, spinners, cup and ball and a selection of puppets.
